The myth to be repeated involves the theft of around 40 luggage trolleys from Schiphol airport. The booty gathers over multiple trips, walking along the same stretch of highway, the same encounters with curbs, with most pushed over bridges into Amsterdam canals or allowed to slide off the pavement.
Suburbia was littered with supermarket trolleys, so they say, before devices with coins or location sensitive lockdowns came into play. If a child is seated near the handle, they can be buried under the cavalcade of cans falling from a supermarket shelf. Some trolleys are equipped with seatbelts. The top shelf is also where eggs can be stored; a tier based on imagined fragility. The mobility of a child who has their legs jammed into openings in a cage is limited.
Youth should be limited.
Lutz Bacher’s Little People dates from 2005, a series of portraits of troll dolls. The interpretation of work based on biography or imagined repression is fraught. Can a gesture be thoughtless? To rearticulate that question – is a gesture reducible to a purpose.
